Loading Arm Extension & Pipework Installation – Hungerford

Loading Arm Extension & Pipework Installation – Hungerford

This project demonstrates Kee Engineering’s ability to integrate new equipment into existing fuel handling infrastructure while maintaining accuracy, control, and safe working practices throughout. Working with pre-installed systems is rarely straightforward, particularly in operational loading areas. Still, careful planning and disciplined execution ensured the work was completed efficiently and without unnecessary disruption.

Project Overview

Three members of the Kee Engineering team were on site in Hungerford for two days to install an arm extension onto a pre-existing loading skid. Alongside the extension works, the scope included creating a break-in to existing pipework and running approximately 60 metres of new pipe from the loading arm to a bulk storage tank via a newly installed pump.

The works required close coordination between mechanical installation, pipe routing, and integration with the existing skid and tank infrastructure. All fabrication and installation activities were carried out to suit the live site conditions and the constraints imposed by the existing layout.

Materials & Installation Approach

The new pipework was installed using flanged carbon steel sections, with careful attention paid to alignment, support spacing, and access for future maintenance. New pipe supports were fabricated and installed where required to maintain correct pipe geometry and avoid unnecessary stress on existing lines.

A new pump was installed in the system to suit the revised flow path from the loading arm to the bulk storage tank. Tie-ins to existing pipework were completed in a controlled manner, ensuring compatibility with the original system while maintaining integrity across all new and existing connections.

Challenges & Solutions

The primary challenge was integrating new equipment into an established loading skid and pipework network. Existing systems rarely match modern layouts exactly, and tolerances, elevations, and routing all needed to be verified on site.

To manage this, the team carried out detailed site checks before cutting into existing pipework. Break-ins were planned to minimise rework, and pipe routes were adjusted to work around structural steel, access ways, and other services already in place. The installation sequence was structured to allow steady progress without compromising safety or access to surrounding equipment.

Results & Client Outcome

The arm extension was successfully installed and connected, with new pipework routed cleanly from the loading skid to the bulk storage tank through the new pump arrangement. All works were completed within the planned two-day site period, with the system ready for onward commissioning by others.

The finished installation provides a clear, maintainable flow path. It integrates seamlessly with the existing infrastructure, extending the functionality of the loading skid without the need for significant alterations elsewhere on site.

This project once again highlights Kee Engineering’s experience in working within existing fuel and process environments. From pipework break-ins to pump installation and loading arm integration, the team delivered a practical, well-executed solution that respects the constraints of live industrial sites while maintaining high standards of quality and reliability.
