Kee Engineering is continuing to make strong progress at Kettering General Hospital, carrying out the mechanical installation within the hospital’s new Energy Centre.

This stage of the project has involved the installation of substantial large-bore pipework throughout the building, with prefabricated sections being carefully lifted, positioned and secured within the developing mechanical infrastructure. It is exactly the type of work that demands accurate planning, experienced installation teams and close attention to the surrounding structure and services.

Large-Bore Pipework Installation

As the Energy Centre has progressed, increasing quantities of pipework have been brought into position across the building.

The installation includes large fabricated pipe sections incorporating bends, branches and flanged connections. With the pipework running at high level and through areas already containing structural steelwork, cable containment and other building services, each section has needed to be carefully manoeuvred into its final position.

The photographs show the scale of the installation clearly, with individual sections requiring controlled lifting before being aligned with the adjoining pipework and supporting infrastructure.

Rather than simply installing straight runs, the team has had to deal with changes in direction, different elevations and multiple connection points while maintaining the required route through the Energy Centre.

Overcoming Installation Challenges

One of the main challenges has been the physical size and weight of the pipework.

Access within a developing plant environment can become increasingly restricted as other elements of the building are installed. Large sections therefore need to be introduced and positioned in a controlled sequence, using suitable lifting equipment and access platforms to allow the team to work safely at height.

Some sections have also required careful positioning between the structural steelwork and surrounding services. Getting these larger fabricated sections into place calls for good coordination between the operatives controlling the lift and those carrying out the final positioning.

Temporary lifting arrangements, mechanical access equipment and external lifting equipment have all been used during the installation to help move the heavier sections safely into position.

A Mechanical Installation Taking Shape

With more of the main pipework now installed, the scale of the new Energy Centre is becoming increasingly apparent.

Multiple large-bore runs are now positioned throughout the building, creating the foundation for the completed mechanical system. The combination of prefabricated pipework and controlled on-site installation is helping the project continue moving forward despite some challenging sections and significant pieces of pipework to handle.

The work at Kettering General Hospital demonstrates Kee Engineering’s capability in industrial pipework fabrication and installation, particularly where substantial mechanical services need to be installed within complex structures.

Projects of this nature require practical engineering experience, accurate installation and the ability to adapt to changing site conditions – all while maintaining consistent progress alongside other trades.

Another solid effort from the Kee Engineering team, with the Energy Centre installation continuing to take shape.
