Kee Engineering recently carried out a mechanical installation project on the Isle of Mull, involving the installation of a new offloading cabinet, loading skid and associated pipework.
The project required a combination of pipework fabrication, mechanical installation and on-site fitting, with the team responsible for installing the connecting pipework and supporting bracketry around the existing tank infrastructure.
Working within a relatively restricted area between the storage tanks and surrounding structures, careful positioning was essential to achieve a tidy, properly supported installation.
Loading Skid and Offloading Cabinet Installation
A key part of the project involved fitting a new loading skid and offloading cabinet, along with the pipework required to connect the equipment to the wider installation.
The loading skid incorporates pumps, pipework and associated fittings mounted on a dedicated framework. Kee Engineering’s work included installing the equipment and the connecting pipework, with the arrangement requiring accurate alignment of the various components and connection points.
The offloading cabinet was also positioned on site, forming another part of the installation.
With multiple pieces of equipment to accommodate, the team had to consider the position of each component and how the connecting pipework would be routed between them.
Associated Pipework Fabrication and Installation
Alongside the main equipment installation, Kee Engineering was tasked with fitting all associated pipework and bracketry.
The photographs show several pipework runs installed around the external storage tanks, including sections routed through narrow spaces between the tanks and an adjacent retaining wall.
This presented some practical installation challenges, particularly where access was limited and pipework needed to be positioned close to the existing structures.
The installation features flanged connections, changes in direction and pipework supported by brackets along the tank bases. These details required careful positioning to ensure the sections aligned correctly while maintaining the intended pipework routes.
The team also carried out on-site fabrication and fitting, with the photographs showing pipe sections being prepared using portable cutting and fabrication equipment.
Working Around Existing Tank Infrastructure
Installing new equipment and pipework within an established tank compound requires careful consideration of the available space.
In this case, some of the pipework needed to run along the sides of the storage tanks, where the distance between the tanks and retaining wall left relatively little working room.
Rather than having unrestricted access around the installation, the team had to work within the available space to position the pipework, install the supporting bracketry and make the necessary connections.
The photographs also show the pipework finished in contrasting blue, yellow and red coatings, making the different runs clearly distinguishable around the tanks and loading equipment.
Installation Progress on the Isle of Mull
With the new loading skid, offloading cabinet and associated pipework installed, the project was taking shape during the team’s visit to the Isle of Mull.
The work demonstrates Kee Engineering’s ability to deliver several elements of a mechanical installation, from equipment positioning and on-site pipework fabrication through to fitting the associated supports and connections.
Working on an island location also demonstrates the team’s willingness to travel to undertake specialist engineering projects throughout the UK.
Another solid effort from the Kee Engineering team, delivering practical pipework and mechanical installation work in a particularly scenic part of Scotland.
